LAP-BAND Q&A

What is Lap-Band?

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, also known as Lap-Band surgery, involves the placement of a silicone band around the top part of your stomach. Once the band is in place, your ability to consume calories to support consistent weight loss is limited.

The office of Bobby S. Bhasker-Rao MD, Inc. offers minimally invasive Lap-Band procedures for adults.

Dr. Bobby uses cutting-edge robotic surgical techniques to position the band through small incisions so your incisions heal quickly.

Do I qualify for Lap-Band surgery?

Candidates for Lap-Band surgery should be in good overall health and able to tolerate surgery. The procedure may be a weight loss solution for obese adults who are unable to lose weight with diet and exercise.

Dr. Bobby might recommend Lap-Band surgery or another bariatric surgery to support rapid weight loss in people who have or are at risk for obesity-related diseases like:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Lap-Band surgery is typically the least invasive type of bariatric surgery. Dr. Bobby places the band without making permanent changes to your digestive tract and can remove it at any time.

What can I expect during Lap-Band surgery?

During Lap-Band surgery, Dr. Bobby makes small incisions in your abdomen and uses daVinci® robotic surgical technology to place the band around your stomach. He controls four robotic arms with a high level of precision to position the band in the upper part of the stomach.

Dr. Bobby determines the tightness of the band based on your weight loss goals. The tighter the band is, the less calories you’ll be able to consume. Lap-Band surgery doesn’t involve changes to your intestines and doesn’t trigger endocrine or metabolic responses in the body.

Because robotic surgery only requires small incisions, you can expect to heal faster and with less risk for pain, bleeding, and infection than more invasive procedures.

Dr. Bobby also provides comprehensive after-care services, including nutritional counseling and physical fitness recommendations to ensure you lose weight safely and consistently.
